THE QA SALARY PROBLEM

The QA industry has a salary transparency problem. Developers talk about pay openly. QA engineers often do not. That silence benefits employers, not you. This guide is going to fix that.

01 Section One

Salary
By Level.

The biggest driver of your salary is your level. Not your certifications. Not your years of experience. Your demonstrated level — what you can actually do and what organizations are willing to pay for it.

In this section.

  • Junior QA Engineer (0–2 years) — and where the widest range exists.
  • Mid-Level QA Engineer (2–5 years) — where the most undervaluation happens.
  • Senior QA Automation Engineer (5+ years) — where the real earning starts.
  • Lead, Staff, Principal — and the path to six figures plus equity.

2026 US ranges — by level.

THE MID-LEVEL TRAP

Mid-level is where most QA engineers spend the most time — and where the most undervaluation happens. Companies love to keep solid mid-level engineers at mid-level pay while giving them senior-level responsibilities. Do not let that happen to you. You need to be doing senior-level work before they give you the title. Start now.

// 5 SIGNALS YOU ARE UNDERPAID
  1. No meaningful raise in two or more years. A 2–3% cost-of-living adjustment is not a raise. It barely keeps up with inflation.
  2. New hires are being offered more than you make. Job postings are public. If your company is posting your role at a range above what you make, you have documentation.
  3. Market research shows a gap of more than 15%. Triangulate across Levels.fyi, LinkedIn Salary, and Glassdoor. A 15%+ gap is not a rounding error.
  4. You are doing senior work with a mid-level title and salary. Building the framework, training the team, leading the strategy — but still QA Engineer II pay.
  5. You are afraid to look. If you have been avoiding salary research because you are afraid of what you will find, that fear itself is information.
// NEGOTIATION — EXACT LANGUAGE

When they ask first.

EXACT LANGUAGE

"Based on my research for senior QA automation engineers at companies of your size and stage, I am looking at a base range of $140k to $160k, with the specifics depending on the full package. I would love to learn more about the role's scope before locking that down — can you share the band you are working with?"

When they lowball.

EXACT LANGUAGE

"Thanks for the offer — I am excited about the work and the team. I will be direct: the base is below what I expected for this scope. I was anchoring closer to [your number]. Help me understand how you got to this figure, and let's see where we can land."

"Say your number. Stop talking. The silence after you state your ask is uncomfortable. Sit in it. The first person to speak after a number is on the table usually loses."

SECTION 03 · SALARY BY LOCATION & INDUSTRYHOFLER ENTERPRISES LLC
03.1

Location still matters — even in a remote world.

Remote work has compressed but not eliminated geographic salary differences. Senior QA base ranges, 2026:

Location / situationSenior QA base rangeNotes
San Francisco Bay Area$140k – $200k+Highest nominal pay, highest COL
New York City$130k – $185kStrong tech market
Seattle$125k – $180kAmazon / Microsoft influence
Austin, TX$110k – $155kGrowing tech hub
Charlotte, NC / Southeast$90k – $130kLower COL, solid fintech market
Remote (US company)$100k – $155kDepends on the company's pay-band policy
03.2

Industry affects pay as much as level does.

IndustryRelative payWhy
Big Tech (FAANG, Meta, etc.)+30–60% above marketEquity-heavy, very competitive hiring
Fintech / Financial Services+15–30%Regulatory requirements drive QA investment
Healthcare / HealthTech+10–25%HIPAA compliance creates QA demand
SaaS / Enterprise SoftwareMarket rateConsistent demand, stable companies
Non-Tech (banking, insurance, mfg)−10–25% belowQA treated as cost center, not investment
THE REMOTE PAY-BAND QUESTION

The real question for remote roles is whether the company uses geographic pay bands. Some companies like GitLab pay the same regardless of location. Most still apply location modifiers. Know what policy your employer uses — it matters for negotiation.
